About Boulder City

The City of Boulder City is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for its residents, visitors, and those who work in or travel through the community. The city is committed to preserving its small-town charm, unique heritage, and identity while proactively addressing its needs and enhancing ... the quality of life.

Boulder City was originally built to house the workers who were employed to construct the Hoover Dam. Unlike other communities in Southern Nevada, Boulder City has employed a managed-growth ordinance that has helped to maintain its small-town feel. It is known for its historical attractions and outdoor events, drawing nearly 100,000 visitors each year to its art festivals and recreational opportunities. Apart from tourism and exciting recreation opportunities, Boulder City is also known for its concentrations of solar energy facilities. The city is predominantly served by hydro and solar electronic power, providing low utility rates and green energy to its customers.

Today, Boulder City maintains strict controls on growth, with limitations on residential and hotel building permits. Alcohol is allowed, but gambling is illegal, with no casinos within city limits. The Boulder Canyon Project Act of 1928 never mentioned a proposed name or title for the dam. It merely allowed the government to construct, operate, and maintain a dam and incidental works in the main stream of the Colorado River at Black Canyon or Boulder Canyon.

Construction of Boulder City began in 1931, and the final bucket of concrete was poured on May 29, 1935. The dam was dedicated as "Boulder Dam" by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on September 30. Six Companies turned over the dam to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule. The federal government relinquished control of the town in 1959, and Boulder City was incorporated the same year.
